Barack Obama tries to energize Deval Patrick

BOSTON — President Barack Obama traveled here Friday to give a speech boosting clean energy technology — and to give a political boost to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who faces stiff opposition in his battle for reelection.

“Nations everywhere are racing to develop new ways of producing and using energy. The nation that wins this competition will be the nation that leads the global economy. And I want America to be that nation. It’s that simple,” Obama said at told a crowd of about 750 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

But there also was a political flavor to Obama’s day trip Friday. After his remarks at MIT, the president was scheduled to head to a lunchtime fundraiser for Patrick at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.
