The hard courts of Flushing are the worst surface for his fragile knees and erratic movements, not to mention Nadal’s inherent inability to take it down a gear when his body’s screaming. Rest would serve him well for the long career ahead.
But here’s the rub: Nadal has never won the U.S. Open.
He’s conquered every other Grand Slam in the last two years. He’s even toppled Roger Federer on grass. The 23-year-old was at the height of the sport when his knees surrendered to tendinitis three months ago, forcing him to take time away from tennis.
But the respite lasted only 10 weeks. Although a longer absence was recommended to recharge for 2010, the defining tournament beckoned.
“It is true, this is the only Grand Slam that remains for me,” Nadal, seeded third, said after Sunday’s third-round triumph over No. 32 Nicolas Almagro, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. “If at some point I win here, it is going to be an important title for me.”
